The tragic events at Montreal’s Polytechnique, Columbine and Virginia Tech have changed the landscape of campus safety forever. All institutions from K-12 schools to colleges and universities have been affected.
However, a recent research report* from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) indicates that almost 50 percent of school respondents said they still were not using staff or student badges. For maximum security, AASA recommends that all staff and students should be included in an integrated access control system that includes the use of photo ID. Nearly 80 percent of administrators responding to the survey describe their funding level as “stretched” or “inadequate”. For many, it’s a choice between safety and textbooks.
